Many people have had their lives ruined by secondhand smoke.Smoking should not be allowed in public places because it cause harm to people around you. The smoke you exhale called second-hand smoke can get into the lungs of other people and cause them to have whatever you have and some. Many little kids around a smoker can become intoxicated because of the smoke that is lingering after it has been exhaled. Smoking when you are young can cause breathing and heart problems when you are older. Smoke can also make your skin wrinkle and look older like a raisin. It can also cause you to have asthma.
Asthma can make it hard to breathe sometimes. Smoke is an irritant which means it can irritate the airways in your lungs and make it hard to breathe. It can make your eyes itchy, red and dry. It can also make your nose itchy and sore and may also get sick more often.
When you inhale second-hand smoke you are encountering the same dangerous viruses and diseases the smoker may have.Your respiratory rate starts to increase, making your lungs work harder. The gases from the cigarette harm the tissues of the lungs and the airways. This causes you to cough up more mucous. The excess mucous is a good place for maturing bacteria and viruses, making you susceptible to colds, flu, bronchitis and other respiratory diseases.
Farther down, inside your lungs, the smoke weakens the roving cells that remove foreign particles from the air sacs of the lungs. Continued exposure to smoke affects the protein that keeps the lungs flexible called elastin exposing you to emphysema. Smoking is the main cause of chronic obstructive lung disease, it is very rare in non-smokers and at least 80 percent of the deaths from this disease can be attributed to inhaled cigarette smoke. From the moment the smoke reaches your lungs, your heart is forced to work harder. The heartbeat may increase by as much as 30 percent during the first 10 minutes of smoking.
While you are smoking, your blood pressure increases, putting more stress on your heart and blood vessels. This automatically increases your risk of heart attack and stroke during the time that you are smoking. When you smoke, carbon monoxide which is the colorless, odorless, deadly gas present in car exhaust, passes immediately into your bloodstream. Carbon monoxide binds to the oxygen cells known as hemoglobin and takes out the oxygen molecules in your red blood cells.Hemoglobin is the protein that gives oxygen to organs and cells. When it binds itself to the carbon monoxide molecule it can no longer carry oxygen. This means that less oxygen reaches your brain and vital organs. Your body cells need oxygen for energy so your energy levels are reduced. The oxygen-carrying capacity of a heavy smoker's blood may be reduced by 15 percent.
Every time you inhale smoke from a cigarette or someone else's, you kill some of the air sacks in your lungs, called alveoli. These air sacks are where the oxygen that you breathe in is transferred into your blood. The alveoli will not grow back. So if you destroy them, you permanently have destroyed part of your lungs. Smoking burns up the cilia that line your lungs. Cilia are little hairs that move back and forth to sweep particles out of your lungs. When you smoke, the cilia can not move and can not do their job. So dust, pollen, and other things that you inhale they sit in your lungs and build up. Also, there are a lot of particles in smoke that get into your lungs. Since your cilia are destroyed because of the smoke and can not clean them out, the particles sit in your lungs and form tar.
After about 10 seconds of the smoke getting into your lungs, nicotine has been absorbed from the lungs into the bloodstream and has been transported to the brain. It stimulates the central nervous system, increasing the heart beat rate and blood pressure and raising the heart's oxygen needs. The smoke constricts blood vessels in your skin, making smokers and people around them who inhale the smoke more susceptible to wrinkling. Cigarette smoke released into the environment also has a drying effect on the skin. The end result is gray wrinkled skin with heavy lines around the eyes and mouth.
Alot of other things also can happen if you get enough smoke into your lungs from second-hand smoke.
If you inhale enough smoke you don't have the physical energy or stamina needed to lead the active lives that they desire or deserve.
Lower quality of life which is how much you enjoy your life, increased depression, and increased anxiety. Shortened life means that smokers usually die 13-15 years too early.
Lung Disease: Chronic bronchitis and emphysema have been linked with smoking.
Cancer: Cancers of the lung, mouth, upper respiratory system, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, cervix, kidney, ureter, and bladder have also been linked with smoking.
Heart disease and stroke.
Sexual Impotence and Infertility.
Cataracts, skin wrinkling, and skin discoloration.
Increased use of other drugs and alcohol.
Complicated Pregnancy: Smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke increases the risk of miscarriage, pre-term delivery, stillbirth, and infant death, and low birth weight.
Unhealthy Families: Second-hand smoke can cause breathing problems (e.g., asthma) and heart disease in non-smokers. Spouses, children, and other people exposed to second-hand smoke get colds, the flu, ear infections, and lung infections a lot more easily than people who aren't around second-hand smoke.
So i say no to smoking in public places and it shouldn't be allowed anywhere where there are a mass amount of people.
