Trying to keep your Christmas tree fresh for Christmas isn't hard. First you want to make sure that you get a fresh cut on the bottom. This opens the pores so that it can soak up lots of water. After you cut the tree put in in water as soon as possible, because the longer the tree is out the less ability it will have to soak up water. If you drill holes for a pin-type stand, you should still make sure you have a fresh cut.
Next Check the stand you are using for any leaks. You should buy a sturdy stand that can hold at least one gallon of water. Fill the stand with fresh water only. If the tree is not going inside right away, put it in a bucket of clear water on a porch or patio. Keep it away from the sun in warm climates and protected from freezing wind in cold climates. Make sure it gets alot of water, if the tree absorbs all the water, a film-like seal will form and the tree will not be able to absorb water.
When putting lights on the tree choose miniature lights. They produce much less heat and therefore reduce drying of the tree. Check the wires for frayed or cracked wire insulation or broken sockets. If you find some do not try to repair, throw away. When you are about to go to bed make sure you turn off your lights and unplug them from the socket.
Another factor that can hurt your tree are heating sources such as heating vents, fireplaces, stoves, radiators, or even televisions. When your done with it for the season do not burn it, many communities will pick up the trees and turn them into ships. If you don't want to give it away you can place it in you front or back yard.
