Nature of School Bus Driving

This article will deal specifically with the nature of School bus driving. School bus drivers provide transportation for millions of school children on an almost daily basis. School bus drivers are in charge of transporting many children, not only to and from school, but to and from school related activities as well.

School bus drivers are required to operate under a strict time schedule while picking up children from specific neighborhood locations. Driving are requires to operate safely in heavy traffic, but also can’t get ahead of schedule in light traffic without running the risk of missing passengers.

School bus drivers typically run the same route every day, once in the morning to pick up pupils and again in the afternoon to return them to their scheduled drop off locations. School bus drivers may also be required to transport students and teachers, as well as any chaperones, on field trips or other school related events. Many School bus drivers are also required to perform regular maintenance of their vehicle, in order to ensure safety.

Bus drivers are responsible for being alert in heavy traffic and bad weather to avoid accidents. Bus drivers must also have the forethought to know how a sudden stop or swerve will affect their passengers. They must also exercise a particular caution when children get on or off the bus, especially in heavily trafficked areas. In addition, they must enforced the school’s code of conduct among the pupils, as well as keeping a watchful eye out for safety risks brought in or preformed by the pupils themselves. School bus drivers may also be required to accommodate students with special needs.

Some bus drivers may be aloud to take the bus home or park it in a safe area, rather than reporting to a garage daily. They are also required to prepare weekly reports on the number of pupils transported, the amounts of times a route is traveled, and work hours, as well as mileage and fuel use.
