The
primary environment for each bus driving is their bus. Constantly being behind
the wheel and in charge of many lives can be heavily stressful. In fact,
driving, especially in heavy traffic, while dealing with passengers is often more
stressful and mentally fatiguing than physically strenuous. However, many
drivers enjoy the freedom of their work, without supervision, and in full
responsibility for their bus and passengers.
School bus drivers generally only drive their buses for work related
purposes when schools are in session. Many work around 20 hours a week, driving
and morning and afternoon route. Some drivers might make an additional route if
they drive a kindergarten route. Other driver might also drive athletic or
other school related trips, which can extend the amount of hours they work
exponentially.
Many drivers do additional work around schools, such as mechanic, custodial,
or even teaching jobs. While drivers with the additional jobs get a large
change in environment, drivers without are required to deal with their buses.
