Queens Councilman Attempts "Three Strikes" Policy
Queens councilman Tony Avella is backing a bill that could let the city actually seize the vehicles of drivers who disobey truck route restrictions 3 times in an eighteen month period.
Avella says that one of the most common complaints his office receives involves illegal truck traffic. Council members from neighboring Maspeth, Williamsburg, and Greenpoint reciprocate this information.
Avella claims that trucks frequently roll through restricted residential roads, leading to traffic congestion and pollution, as well as generally increasing risk for regular motorists.
However, for the plan to work at all State Legislature would have to amend traffic and vehicle law, allowing city officials to seize violator's trucks. Avella already called for this measure in 2006. Avella claims that when threatened with this measure truck drivers would think twice before violating traffic laws.
