How to care for your Granite & Marble Counter?

Natural Stones have been in focus over the last decade or so, as all the designer homes, kitchen remodeling, and upscale condos have found favor with marble and granite. It has eliminated the traditional laminates, painted, vinyl or synthetic countertops which have become outdated. But this has inherently left a big concern for maintaining the looks of this marble or granite with time and keeping its appearance new every time.

It’s a known fact that granite is more strong and durable than marble. Moreover it is chemical resistant and has a higher temperature withstanding capacity. It does not crack like the other stones or does not chip of so easily. Marble, on the other hand, is softer than granite, its chemical withstanding properties are limited, even lemon or vinegar can cause damage.Surprisingly granite is more porous than marble, which does pose a problem.

So how do I protect my granite or marble countertop?  The answer to this is quite simple, first step would be an application of stone sealant before the counter is installed by a professional. Granite being porous can absorb liquids like water, oil, and other liquids which can show up as stains or marks. Using the sealant does not provide any scope of such happening; it is advisable to run this sealing activity once a year on your granite and marble. Sealants are available in a spray or liquid form, and the application procedure is usually clearly mentioned on a bottle. Secondly, there is a variety of cleaning products specifically for granite and marble which are easily available on the market. As far as possible avoid the everyday cleaners for your granite and marble.

With this caution and effort you would be able to take care of your expensive granite and marble counters keeping them shining new for years to come and leaving your visitors in awe.
