Common refrain among many parents of teenagers today is: "I'm getting worried about the fact that he (or she) was drinking, but the drink is at least better than drugs." In fact, alcohol is a psychoactive drug as, for example, marijuana, and the risks of the use of alcohol have been more clearly established by scientists and doctors. Furthermore, the use of alcohol is more common among young people who consume marijuana and other drugs than among those who do not make use of these drugs "nontraditional".
The majority of adolescents have tried alcohol ever in my life, although the frequency of use of alcohol varies with age, sex, religion, social class, place of residence and country of origin.
In most non-Muslims, alcohol is the drug most widely used, more than marijuana, inclusive. It is estimated that 71% to 92% of adolescents in Brazil, have tried alcoholic beverage, around 18-19 years. It should be noted, however, that most teens who adopted the drink are moderate in their use and tend to remain so.
However, if you consider the fact that someone becomes "high" or get drunk once a week or more as a criterion to set the problem of drink, about 5% of adolescents who attend high school in Brazil already have this problem. And these figures only include those who still attend school.
It is known that the problem of drinking is higher among adolescents who drop out of school, and that young people are beginning to drink, and drink more, increasingly early.
