Neurontin: Marketing and Promotion Fraud

Neurontin, also known with its generic name gabapentin was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1993, the drug was launched to the market as an anticonvulsant for persons who suffer partial attacks linked with epilepsy. The FDA also approved it for the treatment of post herpetic neuralgia (neuralgia is a constant ache after a herpes zoster skin reaction eruption). The drug is accessible by medical prescription only.

Nevertheless, this drug has several side effects like suicidal aptitude, attempted suicide, paranoia, memory loss, mania, depression, strange thinking, water retention, dizziness, ataxia, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, fatigue and viral infection. Another problem of the drug is that the company that produces it (Pfizer) said that it may be helpful for other diseases and it is not true. They said (the manufacturers) that the drug can be used for the treatment of bipolar disorder, ache of syndromes like peripheral disorder and diabetic neuropathy, epilepsy, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, attention deficit disorder, restless leg syndrome, trigeminal neuralgia, essential tremor, migraines, chronic pain and drug and alcohol withdrawal attacks.

The corporation was engaged in customer fraud by marketing and promoting Neurontin as a treatment for diseases that it does not cure. Actually, in most of these diseases the placebo effect could work better than gabapentin.

If you or someone that you know has suffered one or several of the side effects above described, contact a lawyer and ask him/her about the possibilities to be awarded in a possible court case.
