What is the Appropriate Wording for Bar Mitzvah Invitations?

If you're not sure what to write on your Bar Mitzvah invitations, you're not alone. A majority of Jewish parents are embarrassed that they just don't know where to begin when it comes to the wording on their invitations. Armed with the sample wording selections and attendant tips below, you'll have a heads-up over your friends and colleagues at synagogue.

Bar Mitzvah Invitations have wording that is deceptively simple. That's the first thing to keep in mind. Even though the event is complex - with extended Torah readings in Hebrew - the invitations are not. In fact, the invitations are the polar opposite of that. So, breathe a sigh of relief and follow these steps:

1. Use about 10 lines of text. Include an adjective-laden introductory phrase, invitation request, son's name, the word Bar Mitzvah, day, date, time, location, and city. If it's done right, it should look like a verse or stanza of a beautiful poem. The poetic context marks the spirit of the event better than anything. Sometimes, with birthdays and birthday cards, for example, jokes are appropriate, but the Bar Mitzvah needs its own special presentation format. For example,

With the beauty of a new beginning
and in the spirit of Judaism
we invite you to share with us in
this moment event as our son
Steven Fishman
becomes a Bar Mitzvah
on Saturday, the ninth of September
at ten thirty in the morning
Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas
Dallas, Texas

The blank format is as follows. Print this off and copy the outline to make your own invitation:

introductory phrase 1
introductory phrase 2
personal request
son's name
bar mitzvah
on day, date
year
time
location
address
city/state

2. Include a verse of scripture at the end of the aforementioned wording sample that references a story or informational maxim about growing up in wisdom, righteousness, and love. The scripture, in italics, can offset the plainly formatted poem and generate reams of approval amongst devoutly religious guests.

3. The best Bar Mitzvah invitations use printing techniques that re-enforce the message. Gold stands for eternal or long lasting and embossed, or raised, script evokes thoughts of a raised character, moral standard, or new beginning. Adorn your beautiful language with beautiful printing techniques.

Don't let the complexity of the Bar Mitzvah muddle your thinking about Bar Mitzvah Invitations.
