Abilify/Aripiprazole: The Best Medication For Schizophrenia

Abilify or Aripiprazole is a medicament used in the treatment of schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a psychological disorder that causes its victim to lose touch with reality, triggering hallucinations, disorganized thought and delusions. Abilify works out by modifying the sensitivity levels to two of the brain’s chief chemical messengers, dopamine and serotonin.

The dosage is usually the same for every patient, one pill a day. Some of the side effects that it presents are anxiety, constipation, blurred vision, cough, insomnia, restlessness, sleepiness, vomiting, weight gain, nausea, and headaches. Moreover, Abilify can be an important cause of dyskinesia, which is a condition characterized by the involuntary movements of face and body. It can be manifested by chewing movements, sticking out the tongue, puckering and/or puffing the cheeks. This condition usually appears in older adults, especially women.

Several studies have shown the efficacy of this medication in patients who suffered schizophrenia and were taking the pills for a period of 52 weeks. An important study run by the American Psychiatric Association confirmed that Aripiprazole is extremely effective in long term or maintenance treatments. Patients showed a better stabilization of their illness with a higher maintenance of this state (over one year period).

The mechanism of action of Aripiprazole is to block the dopamine receptors in case they are over stimulated and, in case it is needed, Aripiprazole can stimulate those receptors. Still, it should be taken under strict observation and following the prescription given by your doctor. Therapeutic responses have been quite positive in those patients consuming the medication in the recommended way.
