Choosing Blinds
When it comes to window decoration, more and more people are starting to see the light – or not, as the case may be. For that is the ultimate advantage of the window blind; total control over the amount of light that enters your room, rather than the simple “sliver of light” effect that curtains are capable of delivering. I’d never deny that curtains can be beautiful and classy but, in terms of practicality and convenience, they simply cannot complete with blinds. With curtains it’s very much an open or closed situation and, in these modern times, most of us prefer flexibility; blinds offer that shade of grey in the otherwise black or white world of window covering.
Cheaper to buy, easier to fit and both cheaper and easier to clean; blinds tick all the boxes in terms of doing their job effectively and conveniently. They are made to fit an size of window and come in a range of designs and styles to suit any purpose; from classy wooden slats and rolled fabric to vertical metal slides and wipe-clean rubber covers, blinds can be made to suit any room. This is not to say, however, that making an informed decision about which kind of blind is best for you is easy to make. Here are three things to consider when choosing a type of blind:
Firstly, consider the window you are covering and how it opens; windows that open upwards will suit any kind of blind, as will windows that open outwards. Windows that open inwards, however, may cause problem for slatted blinds that may get tangled every time you open the window to call out to the people below to tell them how great you new blinds are. Nobody wants tangled blinds – it’s the worst thing that can happen to a man.
Next, consider your requirements for the function of the blind; if it is for light control, go for slatted blinds that offer total flexibility in terms of how much light you allow into the room. If you want them to decorate a traditionally styled room, consider wooden slats or fabric roller blinds, for these look lovelier than cold metal. On the other hand, rooms that require a lot of cleaning – exercise rooms, for example – benefit from metal or rubber blinds that can be cleaned quickly and easily by a person wielding nought but cloth and some soapy water.
Finally bear in mind your budget; it is far wiser to get a cheaper style of blind installed well than a more expensive type of blind installed badly. We’d all love remote-controlled platinum slats with gold engraving, but if they don’t cover the window properly you’ll soon wish you’d invested in a blind master to install some simple but classy wooden Venetian blinds with optimum swivel.
The bottom line is to put some thought into which kind of blind suits your needs best; all blinds are for windows, but not all windows are for blinds.
