Golf Clothing Helps Provide Exclusivity
Golf is played by millions of people worldwide and watched by millions more; making it one of the most popular sports in the world. It’s easy to see why when you compare it to the other big sports; there’s no spitting, fighting and cheating to put up with, the tickets are a tenth the price of most other spectator sports and, although the professionals do win a lot of money in tournaments, it’s only those players who succeed that get paid well! Without doubt, professional golfers the classiest sportspeople in the world. In this article I hope to prove a little insight into a part of the world of golf; namely golf clothing, because I believe it is integral to maintaining the special nature of the sport . Golfers are often ridiculed for their sportswear and for sure it’s not often that you see a golfer advertising a fashion brand, rather than a footballer who has been cleaned, dressed and told where to stand for ten minutes. This may be partly due to the fact that golfers are not particularly athletic-looking individuals, but there’s no doubt that the bizarre clothing worn on the golf course has something to do with it as well! A universal rule of golf clothing is that all players must wear a shirt with a collar; t-shirts, tank tops and the sort are simply not allowed on a golf course. Also, although some clubs allow short-wearing, most require players to wear long trousers, though jeans are rarely considered appropriate wear. It should come as no surprise that an absolute necessity in the realm of golf clothes is the possession of some golf shoes. Although some may claim it’s another way of making golf expensive and elitist, in actual fact you can pick up a pair of golf shoes for around £20 which, when compared to the asking price for certain types of football boot, makes golf infinitely more accessible from the very start. Yet more people would question the need for special shoes on a golf course than would think to question whether the performance offered by Nike Mercurial Vapor Superfly FGs is really worth the £220 price tag. The truth is that golfers need shoes with special spikes to help keep their feet planted to the ground whilst swinging, especially on wet days. Balance is very important in golf and slipping up at any point in the swing can be disastrous; unlike other sports with “foul ball” rules, golfers only get one chance! Equally important to the impact they have on play is the impact that golf shoes have on the course; improper spikes can tear up highly maintained greens and fairways, making wearing appropriate footwear a considerate thing to do as well.
So what are you paying for when you buy a golf membership? Well, to an extent it really is elitist exclusivity, but not in the way that many think. The exclusivity offered by golf courses has nothing to social class, wealth or background; they are clubs that try to restrict their membership to decent people – people that don’t want to cheat, to fight and to take out their aggression on one another. The golf course offers freedom from people that ruin good sports with their petty bickering and over-completive natures; people that can’t handle others doing well when they themselves are doing badly. Golf may have some bizarre customs, but maybe that’s one of the ways they manage to keep the sport special and free from the influx of idiots, with no respect for anybody but themselves.
As strange and outdated as these golfing traditions seem, it’s a small price to pay to be allowed access to a sporting environment without any shouting, swearing and general foul play. Simply put, if you’re still too vain and insecure to handle a little dressing up, perhaps you’re not yet ready to take part in the kind of sport that expects you to fairly score yourself.
