Your Dream Kitchen Made Possible

Modern kitchens are far removed from simply being a room in which meals are prepared - for many this room is truly the heart of the home. A modern kitchen is much more than a room in which cooker and sink are housed. Many popular kitchen designs now include flat-screen TVs and home entertainment systems included in the plan.

Planning is the key and if you are brave enough you can do this yourself. Initially you'll need to think about the things in your existing kitchen that you would like to change. Is it too dark or too crowded and cluttered? Many people like to make their kitchen space larger by knocking through to another room, or perhaps changing the windows to maximise the light available. If wishing to integrate house and garden areas, an extension to a suitably positioned existing kitchen may be the ideal answer.

You can create a detailed and accurate kitchen plan yourself without too much difficulty . Sketch some ideas onto graph paper, or use one of the readily available programs that you can find to use on your PC. Consider consulting a professional kitchen planner, though, if this is your first time. All major manufacturers employ planners, and their services are usually free, provided the manufacturer is supplying your kitchen. A good idea to help you plan is to take a trip to larger retailers and superstores. You are sure to get some ideas here that you may not have considered.

If there is a keen cook in your household, their requirements will be the most important factor to consider. Walking backwards and forwards across the kitchen continually when preparing meals is a waste of time and energy. The cooker, work area and fridge should ideally be within easy reach of each other. You can use what is often called the "work triangle" when mapping your kitchen design. Keep rarely used items stored somewhere out of the way to save on space.

Don't forget that while lots of wall units might look great and provide much needed storage, you will need to factor in enough space for opening the doors. Open shelving can provide an alternative to lots of cabinets; you will need to purchase a top-of-the-range extractor though, as grease and grime can very quickly build up on the shelves.

Fitted kitchens are the norm these days, but an alternative is to have free-standing cupboards or dressers. Restoration of furniture purchased from house clearance sales can provide individuality and flair to your kitchen. A truly rustic feel can be achieved by using good quality, bright curtains in place of cabinet doors.

The larger kitchen suppliers will always have special deals and offers. It may be possible to negotiate a better price if you are having a kitchen supplied, delivered and fitted by the same company. Do not dismiss the idea of using smaller firms though, as a local supplier may be just as competitive price-wise. Using local specialist tradesmen will give you a much more individual kitchen than you could buy from a larger chain store. Their job is too keep you happy as a customer, and so will want to make your dream bespoke kitchen a reality. If they keep you happy, then you will be much more likely to recommend them to others in need of a kitchen designer.
