Yahoo and Myspace.com Likely to be Sued for Accessibility

A federal district court judge recently ruled that a retailer may be sued if its website is inaccessible to the blind.  This ruling could have severe implications for some of the nation’s largest websites that may violate the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Yahoo.com, a leading Internet search engine in today’s information driven economy requires users to visually read and type a string of characters to use their online form to sign up for their services which include free email.  Myspace.com a leading Internet community also utilizes this spam reduction technique which requires a user to read a string of text to fully participate in its online community.

While this method is the current accepted way to block automated spam submissions, some websites have already created ways for the handicapped to use their services.  Blogger.com now allows visually impaired users to click a handicapped icon when commenting which will read a string of characters to the user allowing those without sight to use their services.  One can only assume that many more will soon follow.
