Long before
text messaging dominated the world of telecommunication, a rectangular shaped
gadget can be seen fastened to the pockets and belts of professionals and
students. Before touch-screen cellular phones, pagers were used to bridge the
long distance separating people – a breakthrough in wireless communication.
The
continuous technological innovation gave birth to the trendy phones emerging
one after the other in the market. Despite being out of the limelight for quite
a long period of time, pagers still serve as an important gadget for
information dissemination, without the hassle of enduring a mile-long travel.
It’s
fascinating to recall how a pager works way back then. It’s even impossible to
remember it without having an impish grin knowing that love messages had to
pass through an operator. Replying was also difficult for users of one-way
pagers. It’s hard to imagine how people, who were using pagers before managed
to keep their appointments. Later on, this inconvenience of one –way pagers was
answered with the creation of more sophisticated two-way pagers.
Pager
technology declined as users resort to the glam of touch-screen phones with
camera and music player. The existence of email technology and social
networking sites made the decline even more apparent. Today, both teenagers and
adults maintain two or more social networking sites. With the continuous
innovative trend, people forgot about pagers, and these became one of those
inventions that had gone wasted.
There are
people who see the downside of pagers as an opportunity to utilize the
technology innovatively. Nowadays, pagers are still in use in hospitals to resolve
the problematic cellular phone signal. There are also restaurants that use
customized pagers to attract more customers. Pagers packaged to look as pizza or other
forms of food are handed to customers. Once the customers are ready to give
their order, they only have to send a message. This fascinating and stylish
concept gives pagers a whole new usage.
Innovation
happens. It is innate for man to move towards progress. Technology will decline
once new technology is born. However, inventions must not be wasted. A little flick and those old-fashioned pagers are in the limelight again.
