While
planning to visit your friend’s house for having a meal for some
particular occasion, there may be a curiosity about the dining style
to be followed. This is because different parts of the country own
their own cuisines and more importantly the dining style. Some people
have the habit of sitting on the floor while having food while some
sit on tables. There are also people eating on banana leaves rather
than using plates. Eating using hands also seem to be awkward for
some whereas it is a relished way of having food in some parts of our
country!!
Indians
are generally said to be very entertaining and hospitable in nature.
They love to invite friends to their house and give them a treat or
party on any special occasion or festival. Even if our visit to an
Indian family is without any special invitation or occasion, the
visitor may be requested to stay fir the meal before leaving the
house. This clearly depicts the hospitality and kindness Indians
believe in the great tradition which has been a part of their great
culture called as “Athithee Devo Bhava”. This means that guests
are very much equivalent to God. If God visits our house we may be
confused about how to treat and what to give. So treat our guest in
the best way as possible. In case you fail to behave in this manner
this is considered as a very big offense by all people who are
familiar with our heritage.
Immediately
after reaching the invited house do not expect them to serve the meal
or food. You will be first offered some drinks or beverages after
which some snacks will also be served. This is also the time for chit
chat and catching up on sweet memories. When the host calls they
proceed to the table. Some people especially in the urban area may
dine on tables whereas most of them in the rural area may sit on the
floor and have the meal. Most of the people wish to serve food as
whole from which we can comfortably have what we want instead of
serving individual portions of food for each and every person.
Generally meal may comprise of rice, chapatti, meat (if not
vegetarian), bread, vegetables, lentils, salad, pickles, yoghurt etc.
Water will also be served along with the meal. Once you are done with
the serving let others take their food and start eating together.
South
Indian recipes
served in banana leaf are also to be had with intense care.
There
are people who can have food only with cutlery rather than using
their bare hands. Be care full while eating with your hands that only
your finger tips are used. Do not put your fingers inside your mouth
or lick them after the meal. This s not considered as a manner filled
way. Do not eat with your left hand. Always be careful not to take
something from the person’s plate sitting next to you or offer
something to others from your plate. Think twice before you say no
for a serving as it is sometimes considered rude, given the effort
that is put in to ensure good hospitality. Do not catch
roti
,
naan
etc
in your left hand even though people of other region do so.
