HGV industry goes from strength to strength

In good news for anyone considering HGV training, figures released last month from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders reveal that the HGV industry in the UK is going from strength to strength, according to leading training firm HGV Express (http://www.hgvexpress.co.uk/).

Anyone looking to retrain or further their current skills wants to be confident of the future of the industry in which they train, especially given the uncertainty of today’s job market in the UK. That’s why it is good news for anyone looking for HGV courses to hear that figures released in May 2011 from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) indicate that the HGV industry is looking very healthy. In May, HGV registrations rose by a significant 20.6%, increasing the figure for new registrations for the rolling year to 38,067, which is an increase of more than 3,000 trucks in May alone. There was also a 17.3% increase in the number of new van registrations in May according to the SMMT, bringing the total sales figure up to 246,172 for the rolling year.

A statement from the SMMT Chief Executive, Paul Everitt, summarised the figures: “May’s van and truck registration totals showed sustained confidence in the commercial vehicle market. Heavy trucks, led by artics, again demonstrated the most robust growth in the month, with artics up strongly by 61%. Vans were up 17% in May and by 27% for the year-to-date, illustrating the ongoing resurgence in the market.”

This will be encouraging to those already attracted to lorry driver training. One of the benefits of HGV and lorry driving which regularly contributes to the rising HGV registrations is the regularity of work within an industry which is continually looking for newly qualified drivers. In an economic climate which is leading many industries to cut back on staff and working hours, the heavy goods vehicle industry is experiencing strong demand, creating jobs and increasing the average driver’s weekly driving hours.
