Types of Floor Plans  

Building design and construction is based on a set of technical drawings consisting of floor plans, elevations, etc. Floor plans are the first drawing that is drawn to explain a house design. There are many styles of floor plans each with their own unique identity. Some of the most popular styles of floor plans in building design and construction are:

1. Colonial style floor plan: This is a traditional style plan which is usually rectangular in shape. This style of house design usually has chimneys and a barn roof.

2. Conventional Ranch style floor plans: This style of house design is characterized by “L” shaped floor plan. Usually all the bedrooms in this style are put together in one wing separate from the master bedroom which is on the main floor. This kind of Building design and construction has a very limited scope as they are usually one storey high.

3. Traditional Floor Plans: This style of house design is most common in America. Grandeur in appearance is the characteristic of this style of floor plan. The interiors in such house design are very spacious due to presence of lofts. 4. Contemporary Modern Floor Plans: This style of house design has very plain exteriors. Play of levels, open floor layouts, etc is distinct characteristics of contemporary floor plans. The modern floor plan is heavy on bold shapes and asymmetrical design. Modern day materials like steel, glass, etc are freely used in the construction of such house designs. 5. European Style Floor Plans: This style draws its inspiration from the styles prevailing in England, France and Spain. The spaces created in this kind of house design flow in to one another. 6.

Besides the above categorization there is another classification of house design plans:

1. One storey floor plan: This kind of building design and construction may require more money as more land is required for accommodating the functions. The benefit is that all the living areas are in one level and there are no stairs required in the house design. This is ideal for those who find it difficult to climb stairs.

2. Two storey floor plans: This kind of house design requires less land than the one storey floor plan to accommodate the same number of functions. It also offers more privacy 3. Three storey floor plans: It is similar to a two storey floor plan with the basic difference being availability of an additional floor space.

4. Multi level floor plans: In such house designs a staircase is used to connect all the levels There are some common characteristics of a good floor plan. The plan should be legible i.e. one should be able to understand and navigate the space easily with out getting confused on the floor. The plan should provide ample scope for natural ventilation and natural day light to filter in the living spaces to reduce energy load on the building.
